How to generate random teams
- Paste one participant per line. Enable Remove duplicates if repeated names should count as one person.
- Choose Number of teams or People per team, then set the count or size. Use the bench option if you want leftover participants set aside.
- Click Generate teams and check the members of each group. Use Copy result to copy all teams, or generate again for a new split.
Example: split 12 players into three teams
Paste the 12 names, choose Number of teams and enter 3. With the bench off, the tool shuffles the names and deals them across three teams of four. With 13 players and three teams, the group sizes differ by one. Enabling the bench sets aside the extra player instead of adding them to a team.
Making groups for sports, classes and workshops
The generator distributes names randomly and aims for even headcounts. For a classroom activity, this gives each participant a group without having to choose members one by one. For sports, check that the teams also have suitable positions and skill levels before starting. For a single captain or starting player, use the random name picker; for an individual turn order, use the list randomizer.

Random team generator questions
Can I choose how many teams to make?
Yes. Set the number of teams from 2 to 20. Without the bench option, names are distributed as evenly as possible. When there are fewer participants than the requested teams, the tool reduces the team count rather than creating empty teams.
Can I choose people per team instead?
Use the target-size mode. The generator calculates a team count from the number of participants, subject to its limit of 20 teams. The final size also depends on whether the bench is enabled and whether the list divides evenly.
How does the bench work?
The bench keeps leftover participants separate when the split is uneven. For example, ten names split into three equal-sized teams leaves one person on the bench. Without the bench, all ten are assigned to groups with sizes four, three and three.
What happens to duplicate names?
With Remove duplicates enabled, matching is case-insensitive, so Alex and alex are treated as one name. If two different people share a name, give them distinct labels such as Alex R and Alex S before generating.
Are the random groups saved?
The result stays on the current page until you change or reset it. Copy result gives you a text version of the teams and any bench to keep elsewhere. Copy the groups before leaving or reloading the page.
