Privacy & Cookies
We keep Spacebar Count as lightweight as possible while still using basic hosting analytics and advertising. This page explains what runs locally in your browser, what our hosting provider and ad partners may collect, and how you can control it.
What runs locally in your browser
Most of the logic for the spacebar tests and keyboard tester runs entirely in your browser. We do not require an account or login, and we do not store your test results on our own servers.
- Your theme preference (light or dark) is stored in your browser via
localStorageunder a simple key (for example,sb-theme), so the site remembers your choice between visits. - Recent test results (such as "last 5 runs" on the speed test) are kept only in the current browser session. They are not sent to our backend and disappear when you close or refresh the page.
Hosting, logs, and project analytics (Netlify)
Spacebar Count is hosted on Netlify. Like most hosting providers, Netlify processes some technical data in order to serve the site, keep it secure, and provide us with high-level usage analytics.
This may include, for example:
- IP address and approximate location (country/region) based on IP.
- Browser and device information (user agent).
- Pages and resources requested, referrer URLs, and timestamps.
We use Netlify's project analytics to see aggregated information such as total page views, popular pages, and basic performance metrics. We do not try to identify individual users from these analytics, and we only use them to understand how the site is used and to improve reliability.
Advertising and third parties (Google AdSense)
We use, or may in the future use, Google AdSense to show ads on some pages. When ads are loaded, Google and its advertising partners may collect and process data such as:
- IP address and general location.
- Cookie identifiers or other advertising identifiers.
- Information about how you interact with the site and the ads (for example, impressions and clicks).
Google may use this data to deliver, measure, and improve ads, and-depending on your region and choices-to personalise or de-personalise advertising. For more details on how Google uses data, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
If you are in a region where consent is required for certain types of cookies or personalised ads, we aim to respect those rules by limiting how ads are loaded and by relying on Google's own privacy and consent tools where applicable.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use a mix of local storage (for functionality) and cookies or similar technologies (primarily via third parties) in connection with this site.
- Functional/local storage: the theme preference is stored locally in your browser so the interface stays light or dark based on your last choice. This does not track you across other sites.
- Tool preferences: some randomizer tools (for example the dice roller) store view settings like 3D/basic mode or label visibility in
localStorageso the interface keeps your last choice. - Hosting and analytics: Netlify may use cookies or purely server-side logs to provide us with anonymised or aggregated traffic statistics and to protect the service against abuse.
- Advertising cookies: Google AdSense and its partners may set cookies to deliver and measure ads, and (where allowed) to personalise them. These cookies belong to Google and its partners and are controlled through their policies.
You can control cookies and local storage via your browser settings (for example, blocking third-party cookies, clearing site data, or using private browsing). Note that blocking certain cookies may affect which ads you see and may slightly change how the site behaves.
Legal bases and purposes
Where applicable privacy laws (such as the GDPR in the EU/EEA or the UK GDPR) apply, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Legitimate interest: to operate a secure, reliable website, to prevent abuse, and to understand overall usage through high-level analytics.
- Consent: for certain types of cookies and for personalised advertising where the law requires it. In those cases, your choices are respected via browser settings and Google's own consent mechanisms.
Data retention
We aim to keep personal data only for as long as needed for the purposes described here:
- Theme preference remains stored in your browser until you delete site data or change the setting.
- Session-based test results are cleared when you refresh or close the page.
- Hosting logs and Netlify analytics data are retained by Netlify according to their own policies (typically for a limited period) and are not intended to identify you as an individual.
- If you email us, we retain your message and email address for as long as needed to handle your request and maintain reasonable records.
Security
All core tools run in your browser, and we recommend accessing the site over HTTPS. We also use security-related headers on the server (such as Content-Security-Policy, Strict-Transport-Security, X-Content-Type-Options, and Referrer-Policy) to reduce common web risks. Our hosting provider also implements its own security measures and monitoring.
